Kamarin Lee, 17 – Operational Business
Squared Designs
Brooklyn, New York

"Going through this tough year showed me that, through overcoming the obstacle, no matter how difficult it may be, it is truly possible for the battle to be won."

Kamarin Lee is the founder of Squared Designs, a company that provides a number of services for software companies and programmers for both the Windows and Macintosh platforms. Services offered include Web Design, Web Development, Visual Identity (Corporate Branding), GUI (Graphical User Interface) Design, and Print Media.

Like other young entrepreneurs, Kamarin learned he had to manage his time well to keep his business going while maintaining his grades. During his junior year at Boys and Girls High School the pressure increased because his father was diagnosed with cancer. “It hit me like a speeding freight train,” Kamarin says. “I always knew him as a strong individual, and to see him in this state was so unreal.” Kamarin contributed to the household bills with profits from Squared Designs, and took on other responsibilities to help his family.

Ultimately, his father became cancer-free. Kamarin is focusing on getting ready to go to college, and on completing a new computer program which will “reinvent the way people communicate in a design project,” he says. He plans to keep his business going through college and to expand it on graduation, allowing him to hire apprentices from his community and train them in graphic design.
