During today’s White House Science Fair, President Obama recognized the work of NFTE and of Hayley Hoverter, winner of the 2011 National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, presented by MasterCard Worldwide.

Ten hardworking NFTE South Florida students and their teacher met Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on January 26.  Secretary Duncan honored the Miami Edison Senior High School students for winning NFTE’s World Series of Innovation with their businesses E*Pride and 300 Calories or Less.

NFTE is excited announce the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year® Alumni Fund.  Ernst & Young has pledged to match $300,000 in donations to NFTE during the next three years.  This commitment by E&Y is in honor of the more than 8,000 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year ® award winners.

This year at the 5^th National Business Plan Competition conducted by I Create (NFTE India) we witnessed a historical moment when Montu Shah took the stage.  Montu Shah gave a stunning presentation of his business plan to manufacture individually designed and painted t-shirts. The truly remarkable part about this presentation was that he did it all in sign language.  With the aid of an interpreter and his PowerPoint slideshow, Montu explains how the shirts would be individually designed and painted by the other hearing and speech challenged students in his school.  His business would provide them with a way to earn some greatly needed pocket money, and he will be able to keep his unique business going.

In the beginning it started out with over 900 youth in DC, Maryland and Virginia schools, as well as several charter schools.  They then went through 60+ hours of training on how to start and operate their own small businesses.  Most of the students received seed capital to bring the book-theory to life and purchase their own inventory.  And students from all over the region have showcased their new businesses in their schools and with most of them turning a profit.  In the end these students compete to take their businesses to the next level.

We’re excited to announce that this semester our NFTE Los Angeles program office has a very special partnership taking place in Mr. Jaquias’ 10^th grade class at the Downtown Magnets High School.  These lucky students were specially chosen to participate in the first ever Social Venture Competition. Through this competition they will learn the essential skills and knowledge needed to start their own business through social entrepreneurship.  What is social entrepreneurship you ask? Social entrepreneurship is an entrepreneur that is committed to making a difference in the world through their business in addition to making a profit.

Today we’d like to showcase a class that is putting into action one of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship’s many games that teach students about some of the skills involved in being an entrepreneur.  See Mrs. Parks’s 7^th grade class playing the Innovation Game here and be sure to check out her blog which she’ll be writing over the next 9 weeks about the entrepreneurship project she’s doing in her class.
