St. Louis Students Get Schooled to Become Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs

January 2, 2014  |  13 comments

For the first time in St. Louis history, six local teachers in four different high schools will school 235 students in entrepreneurship.

The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) has teamed up with the St. Louis Science Center and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis to offer NFTE St. Louis in the area. The program provides educational opportunities in business to underserved high school students. Mastercard is a founding partner of NFTE St. Louis.

Late last year, NFTE held NFTE University in St. Louis, an intensive four day program where 11 St. Louis area teachers trained in NFTE’s award-winning core curriculum. Six of those teachers will now go on to bring what they learned to their classrooms.

NFTE St. Louis kicks off at McCluer High School, Berkley South High School, McCluer North High School and Jennings Senior High School. The course features interactive activities designed to provide hands-on business lessons to support the development of an entrepreneurial mindset.

NFTE St. Louis program includes field trips, educational games and experiential learning activities designed to teach entrepreneurship and business concepts. Local entrepreneurs and business professionals are brought in to share a “real world” perspective.

During the course, students develop original business ideas that are presented during a competition on the final day. The top two finishers advance to NFTE’s National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in San Francisco on October 9, 2014. They will compete against nearly 40 regional winners from across America for cash and prizes including startup capital, consulting and business coaching services, and scholarship money.

Though this is the first time the NFTE curriculum is taught in St. Louis schools, NFTE has had an active presence in the area since last year. We held a BizCamp there in the summer of 2013, and one of its attendees, Aliyah Wilson, went on to win the Elevator Pitch Challenge at the 2013 National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge.

All NFTE programs reinforce students’ critical thinking skills and provide them with tools to help them develop an entrepreneurial mindset. NFTE is the only global non-profit organization solely focused on bringing entrepreneurship education to low-income youth and impacts the lives of nearly 50,000 young people annually.
